Kailash Overland Tour from Kathmandu | Kailash Via Kyirong
Cross the Himalayas by road from Kathmandu to sacred Lake Mansarovar and complete the Mount Kailash kora through Dirapuk, Dolma La Pass and Zuthulpuk.
Journey overview
The Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour from Kathmandu is a comfortable 9-night, 10-day pilgrimage travelling by road through the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border to Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash in western Tibet. The journey begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Kathmandu and ends when you return to Kathmandu on Day 10. Accommodation, sightseeing and airport transfers in Kathmandu are not included, but HimalayanWindows can arrange these services on request.
After crossing the Nepal–Tibet border, the itinerary includes two nights in Kyirong, also written as Kerung or Gyirong. Resting here at approximately 2,700 metres gives your body time to begin adjusting before the route climbs across the higher Tibetan Plateau. From Kyirong, the journey continues through Saga and the vast western Tibetan landscape to Lake Mansarovar.
Mount Kailash rises to approximately 6,638 metres and is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of the Bön tradition. Hindus regard the mountain as the abode of Lord Shiva, while pilgrims from different traditions undertake a circumambulation known as the Kailash kora or parikrama. Nearby Lake Mansarovar is also an important part of the pilgrimage. Time is provided for prayers and other rituals permitted under current local environmental regulations before continuing to Darchen, the gateway to the kora.
The traditional outer kora covers approximately 52 kilometres, although the actual walking distance can vary because official shuttle buses operate between Darchen, Yam Dwar and designated trail points. The first day leads to Dirapuk, where the north face of Mount Kailash can be seen clearly in favourable weather. The second day is the most demanding, crossing Dolma La Pass at approximately 5,630 metres before descending to Zuthulpuk. The final section returns to Darchen, followed by a long drive to Saga.
Accommodation standards vary considerably. Kyirong, Saga and Darchen offer hotel rooms with attached bathrooms and hot showers. Lake Mansarovar, Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk have basic dormitory-style guesthouses with shared public toilets and generally no shower facilities. Blankets are provided, but bringing a warm personal sleeping bag is strongly recommended. Travellers should also carry toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitiser and their regular toiletries.
Travellers who do not wish to continue beyond Dirapuk may be able to return to Darchen using locally arranged transport. It may also be possible to continue from Zuthulpuk to Darchen instead of spending the scheduled night there. Both options depend on transport, road and room availability and must be discussed with the guide. Return transportation, additional hotel nights, meals and other costs created by changing the scheduled kora are not included.
This is a demanding high-altitude pilgrimage involving long drives, cold conditions, basic facilities and extended walking days. Participants should prepare with regular walking and cardiovascular exercise and consult a doctor before travelling, particularly if they have an existing medical condition.
Important Tibet Group Visa and Kathmandu Planning
This 10-day itinerary does not include any nights in Kathmandu. Travellers who do not have a valid Chinese visa in their passport may need to obtain a Tibet Group Visa in Kathmandu and arrive several working days before the overland departure.
Anyone requiring a Tibet Group Visa should normally allow at least two weeks for the complete journey, including the 10-day Kailash tour and the necessary working days in Kathmandu. Additional time may be required when the arrival or application period includes weekends, Nepalese holidays, Chinese holidays or changes to the embassy processing schedule.
Visa and permit rules can change and may differ according to passport nationality. Please consult Himalayan Windows and send us your passport information before purchasing flights to Kathmandu. We strongly recommend waiting for confirmation of your required arrival date before booking non-refundable tickets.
Hotel accommodation, international airport transfers, Kathmandu sightseeing and pilgrimage visits to places such as Pashupatinath Temple and Budhanilkantha can be added on request.

Day by day
Walk the route one day at a time — meals, overnight stays, and the details that shape each stage.
Your Kailash Mansarovar overland tour begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Kathmandu. Drive north through the Trishuli Valley and the mountain settlements of Dhunche and Syabrubesi before reaching Rasuwagadhi on the Nepal–Tibet border.
Complete Nepalese departure procedures and cross the border on foot or by the permitted local transfer. After completing Chinese immigration and customs formalities, meet your Tibetan guide and driver. You will then continue to Kyirong town.
Check into a hotel with an attached bathroom and hot shower. The rest of the evening is free for dinner, hydration and rest. Avoid strenuous activity after reaching Kyirong.
NoteDue to the recent flash flood at the Rasuwagadhi–Kyirong border, entry and exit through this crossing are suspended until further notice. Please contact us to arrange a suitable alternative route.
Spend a second night in Kyirong to begin adjusting to the altitude before travelling onto the higher Tibetan Plateau. This is primarily a rest day, so avoid strenuous exercise even if you feel well.
After breakfast, you may take a short, gentle walk around the town with your guide, subject to local conditions. Spend the remainder of the day resting, drinking sufficient fluids and preparing for the drive to Saga.
The overnight stay is again in a hotel with an attached bathroom and hot shower.
NoteRest and optional gentle walk
After breakfast, leave Kyirong and climb towards the open Tibetan Plateau. The landscape changes from the greener border valleys to broad high-altitude plains, rugged mountain scenery and distant snow-covered peaks.
Depending on the route, weather and road access, you may see high mountain passes and sections of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, which later becomes the Brahmaputra.
Arrive in Saga and check into your hotel. Rooms have attached bathrooms and hot showers.
NoteSaga is considerably higher than Kyirong, rest after arrival and immediately inform your guide if you develop a persistent headache, nausea, unusual breathlessness, or other signs of altitude illness.
Today involves one of the longest drives of the journey. Travel west across the remote Tibetan Plateau through Paryang and towards the sacred landscapes of the Kailash region. The route passes expansive plains, rivers, high passes and isolated settlements.
On a clear day, the first distant views of Mount Kailash may appear as you approach Lake Mansarovar. Arrive at the lake and check into a basic local guesthouse.
Accommodation is in dormitory-style rooms. Toilets are public and located outside or in a shared section of the guesthouse. Shower facilities should not be expected. Blankets are provided, but carrying your own warm sleeping bag is strongly recommended.
NoteBring toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitiser, a small towel and all personal toiletries. Night-time temperatures can be very cold, even during the main travel season.
Wake early to experience the quiet morning atmosphere at Lake Mansarovar. In favourable weather, the lake offers distant views of Mount Kailash and the surrounding western Tibetan mountains.
Time is available for prayers, meditation and permitted rituals along the shoreline. All travellers must follow the guide’s instructions and current environmental regulations. Direct immersion or bathing in the lake may not be allowed. Rituals may instead involve sprinkling or using a small amount of collected water in a designated place.
Subject to time and access, you may also visit the area around Chiu Monastery before driving to Darchen. Check into a hotel with an attached bathroom and hot shower.
NoteThe afternoon and evening are used to prepare for the three-day Mount Kailash kora. Pack only the essential clothing, sleeping bag, water, snacks, toiletries, and personal medicines needed for the next three days.
After breakfast, take the official local shuttle from Darchen to Yam Dwar, the traditional gateway to the Mount Kailash kora. Begin walking through the Lha Chu Valley, following a steadily rising trail towards Dirapuk.
The trail is not technically difficult, but the altitude, cold, wind and extended walking time make it demanding. Walk slowly, take regular breaks and remain close to your guide.
Dirapuk provides the most dramatic view of the north face of Mount Kailash when the weather is clear. Overnight accommodation is in a basic monastery guesthouse with dormitory beds and shared public toilets. There are normally no shower facilities. Blankets are provided, but your own warm sleeping bag is strongly recommended.
Carry toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitiser and all other personal toiletries.
NoteHorse and early-return option: A horse may sometimes be hired from Yam Dwar towards Dirapuk for an additional charge. Availability and price cannot be guaranteed in advance. Travellers who reach Dirapuk but do not want to continue across Dolma La may be able to return to Darchen using locally arranged transportation. The guide must first confirm availability. The return vehicle, pickup charge, additional accommodation, and other services in Darchen are not included in the package price.
Begin walking before sunrise on the most difficult day of the Kailash kora. The trail climbs gradually and then steeply towards Dolma La Pass, the highest point of the entire journey.
The high altitude, uneven ground, possible snow or ice and long walking hours make this section particularly demanding. After crossing the pass, descend carefully towards the area overlooking Gauri Kund and continue into a broader valley leading to Zuthulpuk.
Overnight at a basic monastery guesthouse. Accommodation is in shared dormitory rooms with public toilets and generally no shower facilities. Blankets are provided, but a personal sleeping bag is strongly recommended.
NoteOptional continuation to Darchen: Some travellers may prefer to continue towards Darchen instead of staying overnight at Zuthulpuk. This is possible only when the guide confirms that local transportation, road access and accommodation in Darchen are available. Any additional transportation, hotel room, meals or other costs in Darchen are payable directly by the traveller and are not included in the original tour price. Do not continue without the guide’s approval, particularly after the long Dolma La crossing.
After breakfast, follow the easier final section of the kora through the valley towards the designated pickup point. The trek distance today is 9- 12 kilometers. Meet the local shuttle or tour vehicle and return to Darchen, completing the Mount Kailash circumambulation.
After collecting any luggage left in Darchen, begin the long return drive to Saga. This is a demanding day because it combines the final walk with an extended road journey of nearly 500 Kilometers.
Arrive in Saga in the evening and check into a hotel with an attached bathroom and hot shower. Have dinner and take a well-earned rest.
NoteWalking distance: Approximately 8–12km Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours Driving distance: Approximately 450–500km Driving time: Approximately 7–9 hours
Leave Saga after breakfast and retrace the road across the Tibetan Plateau towards Kyirong. As the route descends, the landscape gradually changes from the dry plateau to the greener valleys near the Nepal border.
Arrive in Kyirong and check into your hotel. Your room will have an attached bathroom and hot shower. Spend the evening resting and preparing for the border crossing the following morning.
Drive to the Kyirong–Rasuwagadhi border after breakfast. Complete Chinese departure formalities, cross into Nepal and finish the required Nepalese immigration procedures.
Meet the Nepalese driver and continue through Syabrubesi, Dhunche and the Trishuli Valley to Kathmandu. You will be dropped at your hotel, or another agreed location in Kathmandu.
Accommodation in Kathmandu on this night is not included. HimalayanWindows can book a hotel, airport transfer, Kathmandu sightseeing or additional Nepal arrangements on request.
NoteDriving time: Approximately 8–10 hours, including border procedures
