How does the Tibet permit process work?

As of September 2026, Tibet travel for foreign visitors requires a Chinese Group Tourist Visa and a Tibet Travel Permit — individual tourist visas are not granted for Tibet alone. Himalayan Windows processes documentation through Lhasa partners. Allow 10–15 business days for permits; we need passport scans at least three weeks before departure. How do you manage altitude on Tibet tours?

Lhasa sits near 3,650 m; Everest North Base Camp and Kailash routes go much higher. Our itineraries build rest days in Lhasa before ascending, and guides monitor symptoms closely. When is the best time to travel in Tibet?

April–October is the main travel window for Lhasa, overland routes, and Kailash. May–September is busiest for Mount Kailash pilgrimage weather; winters are harsh and many services pause. Everest North Base Camp views are often clearest in spring and autumn. Permit lead times still apply year-round — plan 10–15 days with Himalayan Windows.
