Journey overview

The experience at a glance

The Haleshi Mahadev Temple is the most sacred pilgrimage site in eastern Nepal, and it is also called Maratika Cave; Maratika cave means the cave of bringing death to an end and the Maratika Monastery. This temple is located in a mysterious cave on a hilltop. According to mythology Lord Shiva hid in this cave to save from the demon Bashmasur who was granted the boon of killing any person he wanted by Shiva. After the monster was dead, with the help of Lord Vishnu Shiva's sly mind and his consort Parvati made these caves their abode. This cave is also a holy site for Buddhists. They believe that Guru Padmasambhava, the second Buddha, meditated here for three months.

He and his consort made a ritual here to achieve nirvana. There are three caves on the hilltop that represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva. The first cave in which Shiva's image lies is called Haleshwar Mahadev and constitutes the main section of the temple. In the second cave, there is an image of Nandi. And in the third cave, the idea of Bhairav lies. After going down 25 to 30 steps at the cliff's walls, a big red stone is worshiped as Gaura Parbat. It is believed the caves to been in existence for 6000 years.

If you have a short time, the Darshan can be made via flights to Lamidanda or direct chartering Chopper to and from Haleshi Temple.
