Lhasa Extended Tour 6 Nights 7 Days | 7 Days Tibet Package
Discover Tibet’s sacred cities, historic monasteries and high-altitude lakes on one unforgettable seven-day journey.
Journey overview
The Lhasa, Shigatse and Namtso Lake Tour is a carefully paced seven-day Tibet journey combining sacred architecture, Buddhist heritage, high-plateau scenery and two of Tibet’s most celebrated lakes. Starting and ending in Lhasa, the itinerary is suitable for travellers who want to experience more than a short city break without continuing to Everest Base Camp or Mount Kailash.
Your 7-day Tibet tour begins with an arrival and acclimatisation day in Lhasa, situated at approximately 3,650 metres. Two days of guided sightseeing introduce the cultural and spiritual heart of Tibet. Visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, along with the great monastic centres of Drepung and Sera. The sightseeing order may change according to timed entrance reservations, opening conditions and local regulations.
After becoming accustomed to Lhasa’s altitude, travel southwest across the Tibetan Plateau. The route climbs over Kamba La Pass and overlooks the vivid waters of Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s best-known sacred lakes. Continue past mountain scenery and the Karola Glacier area to Gyantse, where you visit Pelkor Chode Monastery and the remarkable multi-level Kumbum. The journey then continues to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city.
At Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, explore a vast complex of temples, courtyards and monastic buildings associated with the Panchen Lama tradition. Return to Lhasa by road, with an optional Shigatse–Lhasa train journey available when schedules, tickets and permit arrangements allow.
The final excursion takes you north toward Namtso Lake, situated at approximately 4,718 metres. The route passes Damxung grasslands and offers views toward the Nyenchen Tanglha mountain range. Depending on road and scenic-area access, the journey may cross a pass of approximately 5,190 metres, the highest point of the tour. Namtso is around 230–250 kilometres from Lhasa, and the road journey normally requires about five hours each way, making this a long but rewarding excursion.
This Lhasa tour with Namtso Lake and Shigatse includes private transportation, a licensed Tibetan guide, accommodation, daily breakfast, scheduled entrance fees and the necessary Tibet Travel Permit. Because access, weather and road conditions can change, Himalayan Windows confirms the final Namtso programme before departure and arranges the best suitable alternative if the lake is inaccessible.

Places covered

Day by day
Walk the route one day at a time — meals, overnight stays, and the details that shape each stage.
Arrive in Lhasa by flight or train from a gateway city in mainland China. Travellers may also fly from Kathmandu when the international service is operating.
Your Tibetan guide will meet you at Lhasa Gonggar Airport or the railway station and transfer you to the hotel. The drive from the airport normally takes approximately 60–90 minutes, depending on traffic and hotel location.
After check-in, spend the remainder of the day resting and adjusting to the altitude. Avoid strenuous activity, alcohol and heavy meals. Drink water regularly and inform your guide immediately if you experience persistent headache, nausea, breathlessness or other symptoms of altitude illness.
Begin your guided Lhasa sightseeing with Potala Palace, Tibet’s best-known architectural landmark. Walk gradually through its stairways, chapels, audience halls and former residential areas while your guide explains its religious and historical importance.
Continue to Jokhang Temple in Lhasa’s old quarter. Observe pilgrims following the devotional circuit around the temple before walking through Barkhor Street, where traditional shops, prayer wheels and historic buildings surround the sacred core of the city.
Potala Palace operates timed admission, so today’s visiting order and starting time may be adjusted after the entrance reservation is confirmed.
Visit Drepung Monastery, once one of Tibet’s largest monastic institutions. Explore selected assembly halls, chapels and courtyards while learning about Tibetan Buddhist monastic education and religious traditions.
Later, continue to Sera Monastery. If the activity is operating on your visiting day, you may observe the monks’ traditional debating session in the monastery courtyard. Debate schedules are controlled locally and cannot be guaranteed.
Return to the hotel after completing the sightseeing programme. The relatively steady pace of these first three days helps prepare you for the higher elevations ahead.
Leave Lhasa and drive across the Tibetan Plateau toward Kamba La Pass. Stop at an appropriate viewpoint for sweeping views over Yamdrok Lake, whose turquoise waters curve between dry mountains and distant snow-covered peaks.
Continue toward the Karola Glacier area, subject to road access and the day’s timing. Reach Gyantse and visit Pelkor Chode Monastery and the Gyantse Kumbum, a distinctive multi-storey structure containing numerous chapels, murals and sculptures.
After the visit, continue across the agricultural valley to Shigatse, situated at approximately 3,850 metres. Check in at the hotel and rest.
Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of the most important monastic complexes in Tibet and traditionally associated with the Panchen Lama lineage. Walk through its courtyards and selected temples while your guide introduces its history, religious artwork and continuing monastic role.
After sightseeing, return to Lhasa by private vehicle. A train journey from Shigatse to Lhasa may be requested as an alternative, subject to ticket availability, timetable, baggage arrangements and permit approval. The road journey remains the standard included arrangement unless otherwise confirmed.
Arrive in Lhasa and check back into the hotel. The evening is free for rest or independent dining.
Depart early for the long drive north to Namtso Lake. Travel along the Qinghai–Tibet Highway toward Damxung, passing open grasslands, grazing yaks, high mountains and sections of the Qinghai–Tibet Railway.
Subject to the confirmed scenic-area route, cross a high mountain pass and descend toward Namtso. Spend time at the accessible lakeshore or designated viewpoint, taking in the deep-blue water and the surrounding Nyenchen Tanglha mountain scenery.
Because of the extreme altitude, walk slowly, avoid climbing unnecessarily and follow your guide’s instructions. After the visit, return to Lhasa by the same general route.
Access to Namtso is weather- and road-dependent. Heavy snow, strong winds, temporary scenic-area closure or local restrictions may require a substitute excursion. If access is uncertain, Himalayan Windows will confirm the best available programme before departure.
After breakfast, remain at leisure until your scheduled transfer. Your guide and driver will take you to Lhasa Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station for your onward journey.
You may fly or travel by train to Chengdu, Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai or another mainland Chinese city. Travellers continuing to Nepal may use an available Lhasa–Kathmandu flight or request a longer overland journey via Shigatse, Everest Base Camp and Kyirong.
