Journey overview

The experience at a glance

Langtang Valley & Kyanjin Ri Trek-8 Days is one of Nepal’s most rewarding short Himalayan trips and is a combination of great mountain views and Tamang culture, Buddhist heritage, and beautiful alpine landscapes. Langtang is around 60 km north of Kathmandu and close to the Tibetan border and one of the most accessible Himalayan trekking areas from the capital.

Langtang Lirung (7,246m) dominates the valley, and there are a number of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and high mountain areas. The trek is a great introduction to trekking in Nepal, especially for those who want to see the Himalayas that the Everest or Annapurna experience doesn't provide.

The Langtang Valley & Kyanjin Ri Trek starts with a 7 to 8 hour drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the starting point of the route. From here, the trail follows the Langtang River through lush forests, traditional Tamang villages, waterfalls and peaceful mountain settlements. The landscape at higher elevations gradually transforms from dense woodland to alpine meadows and yak pastures.

Continuing deeper into the valley, you reach Kyanjin Gompa at about 3,870m, the spiritual and beautiful heart of Langtang. With such spectacular peaks and glaciers in the area and with a good base to explore the upper valley, Kyanjin will be the place to be.

Most of the major highlights are the hikes to Kyanjin Ri, which offer panoramic views of Langtang Lirung and the surrounding Himalayan range. The trail then follows a route through the valley before descending to Syabrubesi and driving back to Kathmandu.

Add a Tserko Ri Summit Day

So, for those who want a more challenging Himalayan trip, you can extend that trip by one day to hike Tserko Ri, one of the coolest and most rewarding spots in the Langtang Valley. You will have another night at Kyanjin Gompa and a morning climb of Tserko Ri (when weather, trail conditions, and your guide's advice are necessary).

From the summit, you can enjoy amazing views over the Langtang Himalayas, glaciers, and surrounding high peaks and mountains from the summit before descending back to Kyanjin Gompa. So the trek takes 9 days instead of 8 days and is very much for experienced trekkers who want to go for a more demanding high-altitude adventure.

Trekking Experience & Difficulty

The Langtang Valley and Kyanjin Ri Trek is moderate in difficulty. Walking days during trekking usually take 5–6 hours; however, the day’s route and elevation gain are different. The trail is a river valley-bound route, and we follow the river valley much of the way, so it is slow compared to some higher Himalayan routes.

But reaching Kyanjin Gompa at around 3,870m and doing the Kyanjin Ri or optional Tserko Ri hike requires proper acclimatization and a steady pace. Weather and trail conditions can also change quickly at higher elevations.

The Langtang Kyanjin Ri trek is possible in most seasons, though June to August is the monsoon period, when rain, muddy trails and occasional landslides can affect the journey. Most of the trekking is good in spring and autumn.

A Region Reborn After the 2015 Earthquake: The Langtang region was badly affected by the April 2015 earthquake, which damaged villages, trails and infrastructure. Since that time, extensive rebuilding and restoration have taken place, and the main trekking routes and accommodation facilities have been substantially restored.

Someone trusted in Nepal

I first heard of Anup and his HimalayanWindows Tours from a good friend of mine. Anup came highly recommended and he would try his best to give you the best price and provide the most appropriate itinerary for your needs. Once I arrived in Kathmandu, Anup picked us up and took good care of me and my friends. He also appointed a trusted guide and 2 great porters to accompany us on our Langtang trekking journey. Basically, once you are signed up with HimalayanWindows tours, you need not worry. Anup can accommodate most of our requests and spontaneous additional plans or tours. Thank you HimalayanWindows tours for all your help and hospitality! Most of all, thank you for your warm greetings in a country once unfamiliar to me. You made it feel like coming home. I will definitely contact Anup again for my future Nepal travel plans.
